a reminder for the new year
happy? new? year?
I know I can’t be the alone one that has felt the years it took to get through January alone 😮💨
We don’t gotta talk about it right now…
What I do want to bring into this space is a reminder
you can start again.
today.
tomorrow.
now.
now.
now.
with that, how and when you celebrate the “new year” is up to you.
New Year can be whatever you want it to be.
You want to get into that Gregorian New Year energy?
I love that for you.
For me, it definitely was my first exposure to a new year, new you-esque tradition. We would get excited, concoct new goals, and dream big dreams. Regardless of how they came to fruition, it was delicious to commune with and celebrate proactively.
The collective power can be palpable for some. That shit can be potent - super useful for starting/restarting/refreshing.
and
We got options!
Good ol’ Greg is not the only “new year” that exists.
Lunar New Year, this year, falls on January 29th. Typically, it begins on the first new moon and ends on the first full moon. Although it’s common to see Lunar New Year associated with China, folks around the world celebrate with family (ancestors included) and focus on good luck and prosperity.
I tend to feel the buzz of the new year in the spring, particularly around the Equinox (Vernal/Spring, Ostara, or Nowruz if you celebrate) which this year is March 20th (at least in this hemisphere). This is the optimal time, for some, to tend new to initiatives and enjoy the bloom 🌷.
Another time of the year which can feel invigorating with newness is your birthday. The year to date of when you touched down as a tiny human can be a wonderful time to celebrate and set intentions for you. Happy Uterine Liberation to youuuuu! Cheers to the true New Year baby!
Several other new year celebrations exist, factoring in those that are closed practices vs. open celebrations. With those I know of, there is a common theme of gathering with our loved ones and cherished community members. I hope you get as much quality time in your year as you desire - regardless of the time of the year.
Take home message: Choose your own adventure. Choose and honor your own rituals and traditions, even if that means you conjure your own.
We can’t ignore the state of the world. We can't ignore the grief we need to tend to
and
that also means we can’t ignore all that we are grateful for.
Not in the spiritual bypassing sense.
But in the fiercely protecting our joy and our pleasure.
For us, this is necessary.
and
an act of resistance.
What are some “new year” traditions that you take part in and/or are looking forward to?
